Shrinkage After Washing ISO 6330 & ISO 5077

Dimensional change is measured by marking the fabric, washing and drying it with an ISO 6330 procedure and calculating the change with ISO 5077. The US equivalent is AATCC 135.

What This Test Measures

ISO 3759 sets marking, ISO 6330 the wash and dry procedure, and ISO 5077 the calculation. “Shrinkage ±5%” is only testable with the wash temperature and drying method.

Many specifications also ask for spirality (“twist”) after washing: how far the side seams or wales turn. It is tested separately from shrinkage.

How We Run It in Our Lab

Our technicians follow a written work instruction for this method.

01

Condition and Mark

Measuring points are marked in length and width.

02

Wash

Washed with the agreed ISO 6330 procedure, for example 4N at 40 °C, with ballast.

03

Dry

Dried as agreed: line, drip, flat or tumble.

04

Measure

The change is calculated as a percentage for length and width.

Separate Length and Width

Knits often shrink more in length than width; set limits for each.

Questions About ISO 6330 / ISO 5077

How is fabric shrinkage measured?

The fabric is marked (ISO 3759), washed and dried with an ISO 6330 procedure, and the change is calculated with ISO 5077.

What does ±5% shrinkage mean?

Length and width may change by no more than 5% after the agreed wash and dry procedure. Tumble drying usually gives more shrinkage than line drying.

Is ISO 6330 the same as AATCC 135?

No. They use different washing machines, programmes and drying, so results are not interchangeable.
