TESTMETHODE · ISO 105-X12

A white cotton rubbing cloth on a rubbing finger is rubbed along the fabric under a fixed load, once dry and once wet. The colour on the cloth is graded with the grey scale for staining.
Wet rubbing is usually the harder test: water helps loose dye move from the fibre surface to the cloth, so dark and heavily dyed shades measure lower wet grades.
Our technicians follow a written work instruction for this method.
Dry and wet rubbing are run on separate specimens, in length and width when required.
A specimen of at least 50 × 140 mm is clamped flat on the tester.
A cotton rubbing cloth (ISO 105-F09) on the 16 mm finger rubs 10 times to and fro along 104 ± 3 mm under 9 N.
A fresh cloth is wetted to the pick-up of the named method (ISO about 100%, AATCC 8 about 65%), rubbed the same way and dried.
Rubbing cloths are graded with the staining grey scale in a light booth, backed by white cloth, by at least two technicians.

Results depend on fibre, construction, shade and finishing.
| Fabric / shade | Ons gemeten bereik | Values in buyer specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Dark 100% cotton knits, wet | Up to grade 3, depending on fabric and finishing | Grade 3; dark shades 2-3 |
Wet rubbing on dark cotton depends on dye, shade depth and finishing. “Our measured range” comes from our own test records on bulk lots. “Values in buyer specifications” are requirements we have received; the value that applies to your order is the one written into it. — Xiwen Zhang, Co-founder & CEO
Many brands set wet rubbing at grade 3 for light and medium shades and 2-3 for dark shades. Agree the shade groups with the order.
ISO 105-X12 and AATCC 8 wet the cloth differently, so the same fabric can give different wet grades.
If a dark shade needs a higher wet grade, ask us about after-treatment, dye selection or a blended fabric before production.
Water helps loose dye move from the fibre surface onto the rubbing cloth, so more colour transfers, especially on dark shades.
On our dark 100% cotton knits, wet rubbing usually measures up to grade 3, depending on fabric and finishing. We confirm the expected result for your shade before the order.
Both use a crockmeter with a 9 N load, but the wet rubbing cloth is wetted to about 100% in ISO 105-X12 and about 65% in AATCC 8, so wet results differ.
